The Yoga Sutra Study Group will provide you with a deep understanding of the Yoga Sutras, one of the foundational texts of classical yoga philosophy. This course explores the wisdom and insights contained within the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, offering trainees an opportunity to delve into the profound teachings and integrate them into their personal practice and teaching methodology.
Course Objectives:
1. Study of the Yoga Sutras: Trainees will engage in a comprehensive study of the Yoga Sutras, which consists of four chapters or books (Padas). The course will explore the sutras in a systematic manner, discussing their meanings, interpretations, and practical applications.
2. Exploration of the Eight Limbs of Yoga: The Yoga Sutras outline the eight limbs (Ashtanga) of yoga, which serve as a roadmap for personal and spiritual growth. Trainees will examine each limb, including Yamas (ethical principles), Niyamas (self-disciplines), Asanas (physical postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (state of deep absorption).
3. Understanding Yoga Psychology: The Yoga Sutras provide valuable insights into the workings of the mind and emotions. Trainees will explore concepts such as Chitta (mind-stuff), Vrittis (modifications of the mind), and Kleshas (afflictions), gaining a deeper understanding of yoga psychology and its relevance to personal growth and self-transformation.
4. Personal Reflection and Self-Inquiry: The study of the Yoga Sutras invites trainees to reflect on their own lives and practice. Through contemplative exercises, journaling, and discussions, trainees will explore how the teachings of the Yoga Sutras can be applied to their personal journeys, enhancing their own growth and transformation.
5. Integration of Yoga Philosophy into Teaching: Trainees will learn how to integrate the wisdom of the Yoga Sutras into their yoga classes and teaching methodology. This includes incorporating philosophical themes, using appropriate language, and guiding students towards a holistic understanding of yoga beyond the physical practice.
This course is the perfect addition to the required module of Yoga History and Philosophy with Carolyn, allowing trainees to take a deep dive into the study of the Sutras. History and Philosophy will provide historical context and philosophy through a historical overview of the Yoga Sutras and their significance within the broader context of yoga philosophy.
